These 40 2nd grade vocabulary words mix school words (compare, describe, examine, habitat, distance) with story words (adventure, cautious, generous, vanish, shiver). Several pairs teach shades of meaning: disappear and vanish, avoid and ignore, rapid and hurry from 1st grade.

Each word comes with a definition and example sentence. Work through one set of 10 a week: read and talk about the words, then use the matching and fill-in-the-blank sheets. Second graders can usually read the definitions on their own.

Tips for using it

  • Compare and describe come up in every subject. Use them in your own questions.
  • Play 'Which word fits?': give a situation and let your child choose the word.
