These 40 1st grade vocabulary words include feeling words (eager, frightened, furious, lonely, nervous), describing words (sturdy, ordinary, familiar, rare) and action words (observe, rescue, mend, glance, seek). They're words first graders hear in read-alouds and will soon read on their own.

Each word has a simple definition and an example sentence. Read the list together in sets of 10, talk about when you'd use each word, and try a matching sheet at the end of the week. First graders who can't yet read the definitions can do matching orally.

Tips for using it

  • Make a feelings chart with the emotion words and use it during the day.
  • Ask questions that use the word: What would make you feel eager?
