Place value with six-digit numbers: expanded form, standard form, the value of a digit, rounding to any place and comparing. The Common Core standards ask 4th graders to read and write multi-digit whole numbers in base-ten numerals, number names and expanded form, compare them, and round to any place, all with numbers less than 1,000,000.

The big idea for 4th grade is that each place is ten times the place to its right: the 7 in 70,000 is ten times the 7 in 7,000. Commas help children read the periods (thousands, ones). For focused practice, see rounding for 4th grade or the 4th grade math review.

Tips for using it

  • Read the number in groups of three digits split by commas.
  • For digit value, count places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands …

Questions

What is the value of a digit?

The digit times its place. In 352,618 the 5 is in the ten-thousands place, so its value is 50,000.

How far do 4th graders go with place value?

Numbers up to 1,000,000. Decimals to hundredths are also introduced in 4th grade, and millions and decimal place value expand in 5th grade.
