A mixed place value sheet for three-digit numbers: count base-ten blocks, write numbers in expanded form, turn expanded form into a number, compare with <, > or =, and name the value of a digit. These match the 2nd grade standards: understand hundreds, tens and ones; read and write numbers to 1,000 in base-ten numerals, number names and expanded form; and compare three-digit numbers.
Watch for zeros: 406 has no tens, so its expanded form is 400 + 6. For more practice on one skill, see base-ten blocks, expanded form and skip counting by 5s, 10s and 100s.
Tips for using it
- Use a place value chart with hundreds, tens and ones columns.
- Compare from the left: the hundreds decide first, then the tens.

Questions
What place value does 2nd grade cover?
Hundreds, tens and ones; counting within 1,000 and skip counting by 5s, 10s and 100s; reading and writing numbers in different forms; and comparing three-digit numbers.
How do you compare three-digit numbers?
Look at the hundreds first. If they match, compare the tens, then the ones. 482 is less than 528 because 4 hundreds is less than 5 hundreds.
