On this sheet each word is missing its l-blend. Your child reads the rest of the word, tries each choice (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl), writes the one that makes a real word, and reads it. Only one choice makes a real word, so it takes careful reading, not guessing.

All of the words have a short vowel, and many are CVC words with a blend in front: _ag can only be flag from these choices, and _ock only clock.

L-blends are a common first blend group because the l is easy to hear. Follow up with the r-blends and s-blends sheets.

Tips for using it

  • Have your child say each choice in the word out loud before writing.
  • Check that both letters of the blend are written, not just the first.

Questions

What are the l blends?

Bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl, as in black, clap, flag, glad, plum and sled.

How do I help a child who skips the l?

Say the word slowly and stretch the l (fff-lll-ag). Sound boxes, with one box per sound, also make the l harder to skip.
