S-blends (sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw) start with a stretchy s, which makes them easy to hear but easy to cut short: children often read stop as sop. On this sheet your child reads each s-blend word, traces it while saying every sound, and writes it.

Writing both letters of the blend, and saying both sounds while writing them, is what makes them stick.

The words are all short-vowel words (skip, snap, spot, stem, swim). Sl words are on the l-blends sheet.

Tips for using it

  • Say the sounds as you trace: /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/. No sound should be skipped.
  • Fold the page to hide the bold words and dictate them for the last column.

Questions

Which s-blends are on this sheet?

Sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st and sw. Sl is on the l-blends sheet.

Why does my child read stop as sop?

The t is short and quiet after a long s, so it's easy to miss. Slow, finger-tracked reading fixes it for most children.
