Ee and ea both spell long e, and unlike ai and ay, there isn't a position rule to tell them apart: feet and meat, seed and read. Children learn which spelling goes with which word mostly by reading and spelling the words many times.
This sort gives that practice. Your child reads each word, notices the spelling, and writes it in the ee or ea column. Homophones like meet and meat show why spelling matters.
Every ea word here says long e. Ea has other sounds too (bread, great), but those are best taught after this one is solid.
Tips for using it
- Make a quick 'ee or ea' spelling game: say a word from the sort and have your child spell it.
- Point out homophone pairs (meet/meat, see/sea) and talk about the meanings.

Is there a rule for ee or ea?
Not a reliable one. Both spell long e in the middle of a word. Kids learn which is which through reading and sorting.
Does ea always say long e?
No. It says long e most often (eat, team), but short e in words like bread and head, and long a in great and break.
