Vowel teams spell one vowel sound with two or three letters, and several teams can spell the same sound: ai and ay are both long a, ee and ea are both long e. This sort puts that idea front and center. Your child reads each word in the word bank and writes it under its sound: long a, long e, long i, long o or oo (as in moon).

Sorting by sound, not spelling, shows how English works: one sound, several spellings. Afterward, look at each column and talk about which spellings showed up.

For focused practice on one pair, use the ai and ay, ee and ea, or oa and ow sorts.

Tips for using it

  • Read each column aloud when the sort is done. All the words in a column should share a vowel sound.
  • Underline the vowel team in each word before sorting.
