Ai and ay both spell long a. The clue to which one to use is position: ai usually comes in the middle of a word (rain, tail, paint), and ay comes at the end (day, play, tray). English words rarely end in i, which is why ay takes the end spot.
On this sort your child reads each long a word and writes it in the ai or ay column. Then ask them to look at the columns and find the pattern for themselves. Kids remember a rule better when they spot it.
This rule is very reliable for one-syllable words, so it's one of the first spelling choices children can make with confidence.
Tips for using it
- After sorting, ask: 'Where is the ay in every word?' Let your child discover that it's at the end.
- Try spelling a few new words by the rule: stain or stay?
