Dinosaur kids love long names, and this word search delivers: Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Ankylosaurus and Spinosaurus share a 28-word bank with paleontology words like fossil, extinct, herbivore, carnivore, Jurassic and Cretaceous. Each puzzle picks 14.

Long names need room, so the grid grows to fit them, usually 13 × 13 or 15 × 15. That makes this puzzle a good fit for 2nd to 5th graders. The bank also includes Pteranodon, which lived alongside dinosaurs but was a flying reptile, not a dinosaur. That's a fun fact to check with a dino-obsessed kid.

Tips for using it

  • Have kids sort the dinosaurs they found into plant-eaters and meat-eaters.
  • Sound out the long names together: tri-SER-uh-tops, steg-uh-SOR-us.

Questions

Was the Pteranodon a dinosaur?

No. Pteranodon was a pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived at the same time as dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were land animals.

What period did T. rex live in?

Tyrannosaurus rex lived at the very end of the Cretaceous period, about 68 to 66 million years ago, shortly before the mass extinction.
