Switched-On Schoolhouse (SOS)
Alpha Omega Publications' former Windows-based Christian homeschool software for grades 3–12, with auto-graded lessons in five core subjects. It has been discontinued; AOP's online Monarch program is the closest current replacement.
What is Switched-On Schoolhouse?
Switched-On Schoolhouse (SOS) was Windows software from Alpha Omega Publications (AOP), a Christian homeschool publisher. It turned AOP's LIFEPAC worktexts into interactive lessons with video, audio, games and automatic grading.
The key fact for 2026: SOS is discontinued. Retailers report that AOP stopped selling it around 2021, and AOP tech support ended in June 2022. As of October 2026, AOP's website lists Monarch, LIFEPAC, Horizons and Ignite Christian Academy, not SOS.
How Switched-On Schoolhouse worked
Families installed SOS from a USB drive (earlier versions came on CD-ROM). Students logged in, read lessons, watched short clips and answered questions. The program graded most work, kept records and tracked attendance. Parents could set lesson plans, let a child repeat or skip lessons, and print reports.
It ran offline, which made it popular with families in rural areas. One license covered up to five students in the same family.
What it covered
| Grades | Core subjects | Extras |
|---|---|---|
| 3–12 | Bible, history and geography, language arts, math, science | Many electives, sold separately |
Each grade came as a five-subject set or single subjects. Lessons reflected AOP's Christian, Protestant and creationist viewpoint. There was no K–2 version.
Who should consider it today
SOS may still make sense if you already own a set and have a compatible Windows 10 computer. Retailers list Windows 10 Home or Pro (not S mode) as the requirement, and it never ran on a Mac or Chromebook.
For almost everyone else, a supported program is the safer choice. Used copies come with no help if installation or activation fails.
Pricing at a glance
There's no current price from AOP because SOS is no longer sold. Retailer stock has been listed as limited, and used sets resell online at varying prices. Factor in the risk of no support before paying for a used set.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Unlikely for SOS itself, since approved vendor marketplaces carry current products. Its replacement, Monarch, is a current subscription, and curriculum like it is often an allowable expense in programs such as Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account. Each program decides.

Switched-On Schoolhouse (SOS) FAQs
Is Switched-On Schoolhouse discontinued?
Yes. Retailers report that Alpha Omega Publications discontinued SOS around 2021, and AOP tech support ended in June 2022. AOP's site now lists Monarch, LIFEPAC, Horizons and Ignite Christian Academy, not SOS.
What replaced Switched-On Schoolhouse?
Monarch, AOP's online subscription curriculum, is the closest replacement. It offers similar Christian content and auto-grading for grades 3–12 but runs in a web browser and needs internet.
Will Switched-On Schoolhouse work on Windows 11 or a Mac?
SOS was never Mac-compatible. Retailers list Windows 10 Home or Pro (not S mode) as the supported system, and AOP said it expected the USB version to keep working without support. Newer Windows versions are not guaranteed.
Should I buy a used SOS set?
Only if you have a compatible Windows computer and accept that there's no tech support. Check the edition, the license transfer and whether the seller includes the full set before you pay.
What grades and subjects did SOS cover?
Grades 3 through 12 in Bible, history and geography, language arts, math and science, plus electives. Content was based on AOP's LIFEPAC worktexts with added multimedia.
Was SOS accredited?
No. SOS was curriculum software, not a school. Families who want an accredited program from the same publisher can look at Ignite Christian Academy.
