Half-inch graph paper has squares twice as wide as standard quarter-inch paper, so young kids can fit one digit in each box. That makes it a great tool in 1st through 3rd grade for lining up columns in addition and subtraction with regrouping, drawing arrays for early multiplication, and making simple bar graphs.

A darker line every inch helps with counting and measuring. Kids who still write large, or who have trouble with fine motor control, often do better on this size than on standard graph paper. Move to quarter-inch when their handwriting shrinks.

Tips for using it

  • Draw arrays for multiplication: 3 rows of 5 squares shows 3 × 5 = 15.
  • Write each digit of a two-digit addition problem in its own box so ones stay under ones.
