Dot paper replaces grid lines with small dots at each corner, quarter inch apart. Kids draw shapes by connecting dots, which makes it ideal for geometry: drawing polygons, finding area by counting squares inside a shape, exploring symmetry and reflections, and playing dots and boxes. Adults use the same paper for bullet journals and sketching.

The dots are light gray so they guide without crowding your drawing. Change Square size for wider spacing (1/2 inch or 1 cm) for younger kids, or try isometric paper for 3D drawings.

Tips for using it

  • Draw a shape on the dots and count the squares inside to find its area.
  • Play dots and boxes on a corner of the page while you wait for dinner.

Questions

What is dot paper used for in math?

Drawing shapes, exploring area and perimeter, symmetry and transformations, and geoboard-style activities without a geoboard.

How far apart are the dots?

A quarter inch by default. Choose another spacing under Square size.
