How to use it
- Press Start
The timer opens set to 1 hour. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.
- Pick a picture
Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.
- Choose the ending
Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.
A 1 hour timer you can trust for the whole hour
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
The timer opens set to 60 minutes. Press Start and the pie shrinks toward 12 over the hour. When it's done, it turns green, says Time's up and plays a gentle chime (or nothing, with No sound).
How long is 1 hour?
| Measure | 1 hour |
|---|---|
| Minutes | 60 |
| Seconds | 3,600 |
| Minute hand | All the way around once |
| Hour hand | From one number to the next |
| Each quarter of the pie | 15 minutes |
One hour on a clock
The link between the two hands is the big idea in telling time: while the minute hand goes all the way around, the hour hand moves just one number. Start the 1 hour timer at 3:00, and when it rings the clock says 4:00. In between, every quarter of the pie is a quarter hour: 3:15, 3:30, 3:45. Children can watch that happen in five seconds on the interactive clock by pressing Watch it move.
What to do with a 1 hour timer
| Activity | How |
|---|---|
| Test or exam section | Full screen, numbers only, sound off. Use the minus button for a shorter section. |
| Long work block | Homework or a project, with a short break at the halfway mark. |
| Cooking and baking | A big, readable kitchen timer. |
| Screen-time budget | One hour, agreed before it starts. |
| Practice session | Older students' music or sports practice. |
| Quiet time | A long afternoon rest for young children. |
Breaking an hour into parts
An hour is a long time for children to focus. Two or three shorter blocks often work better:
- Two halves: work for 25 minutes, break for 5, and repeat, with a 30 minute timer for each half.
- Quarters: watch the pie and take a one-minute stretch each time a quarter is gone.
- Several timers: the classroom timer runs up to four countdowns, for example one for the whole hour and one for each break.
Elapsed time with an hour
One hour is the easiest jump on an elapsed time number line, and a good way to teach it. "The movie starts at 6:45 and lasts an hour and 20 minutes. When does it end?" Jump 15 minutes to 7:00, then 1 hour to 8:00, then 5 minutes to 8:05. The elapsed time calculator draws those jumps for any start and end time.
A full hour for tests
Practice tests are where a long, reliable timer matters most. For a realistic run-through, put the timer in full screen with numbers only and the sound off, so it's visible but quiet. Write the start and end times on the board too: some students like to calculate how much time is left per question, which is good elapsed time practice. If the real test has sections, use the minus button to set each section's length, or run one timer per section on the classroom timer, named Section 1, Section 2 and so on.
Other timers
For shorter work, use the 30 minute timer or 20 minute timer. For longer, type any time up to a full day into the box under the timer.
Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions
How many seconds is an hour?
One hour is 60 minutes, or 3,600 seconds. On a clock, the minute hand goes all the way around once while the hour hand moves from one number to the next.
Will a 1 hour timer stay accurate in a background tab?
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
Can I set 90 minutes or 2 hours?
Yes. Type 90, 1:30:00 or 2:00:00 in the box under the timer and press Set.
