How to use it

  1. Press Start

The timer opens set to 2 minutes. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.

  2. Pick a picture

Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.

  3. Choose the ending

Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.

A 2 minute timer for brushing, turns and quick jobs

Two minutes is the length of many small routines that children rush: brushing teeth, washing hands well, a turn on the swing, a quick tidy of the desk. This timer opens set to two minutes. Press Start and the pie starts full and shrinks toward 12. When it's gone, the timer turns green, says Time's up and plays a gentle chime, or stays silent if you choose No sound.

For young children, the pie or the sand timer is best: "Keep brushing until the sand runs out" is easier to follow than watching numbers. Older children can switch to big numbers.

How long is 2 minutes?

Measure2 minutes
Seconds120
Part of an hour1/30
Minute handTwo small tick marks
Second handTwice around the clock
Each quarter of the pie30 seconds

Two minutes feels longer than you'd think. Ask children to guess when two minutes are up without looking, then check. It's a good way to show why a timer helps with brushing.

Brushing teeth for two minutes

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes each time with fluoride toothpaste. Two minutes is long enough to reach every tooth, but most children stop well before then. A visible timer turns it into a game:

  1. Put the timer on a phone or tablet near the sink, in pie or sand view.
  2. Split the mouth into four parts: top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.
  3. Spend one quarter of the pie (30 seconds) on each part.
  4. When the chime plays and the screen turns green, done.

Use the same chime every night so it becomes part of the routine.

Teaching time with two minutes

Two minutes is a nice first step from seconds to minutes. On the interactive clock, press +1 min twice and watch the minute hand move two little ticks. Then ask: if it's 3:10 now, what time will it be when the 2 minute timer ends? (3:12.) The telling time game at the 1 minute level practices reading times like that.

Why two minutes feels long to kids

Adults know roughly how long two minutes is; young children usually don't. Ask a five-year-old to brush "for two minutes" and you'll often get twenty seconds. That isn't stubbornness: a sense of time develops slowly through childhood, and children rely on outside cues until it does. A visible timer is that cue. After a few weeks of brushing with the pie, many children start to know when they're nearly done before the chime. If your child resists, let them pick the sound, or let them press Start themselves. Small choices go a long way.

Two minutes also makes a quick subtraction question: if the timer shows 1:20 left, how many seconds have passed? (40.)

Other timers

The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.

Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions

How many seconds is 2 minutes?

Two minutes is 120 seconds. On a clock, the minute hand moves two small tick marks, and the second hand goes around twice.

Can I split the 2 minutes into parts?

Look at the pie: each quarter is 30 seconds. For brushing, that's one quarter of the pie for each quarter of the mouth (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right).
