How to use it
- Press Start
The timer opens set to 1 minute. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.
- Pick a picture
Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.
- Choose the ending
Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.
A 1 minute timer you can see
One minute is short enough that nobody minds waiting and long enough to get something done. That makes the 1 minute timer the busiest one in many classrooms and kitchens: a minute to finish a sentence, a minute of quiet, a minute-to-win-it game. This timer opens set to one minute. Press Start and the pie starts full and shrinks toward 12; at the end it turns green, says Time's up and plays a soft chime (or no sound, if you choose).
Because one minute goes by fast, the pie is the best view for children: they can see it half gone at 30 seconds without reading anything. Big numbers are better for older students and adults, and you can switch any time.
How long is 1 minute?
| Measure | 1 minute |
|---|---|
| Seconds | 60 |
| Part of an hour | 1/60 |
| Second hand | One full trip around the clock |
| Minute hand | One small tick mark |
| Heartbeats (resting adult) | Roughly 60 to 100 |
A good way to feel one minute: close your eyes, start the timer, and raise your hand when you think a minute has passed. Most people guess early. Try it twice and children get much closer the second time, which is a nice first lesson in estimating time.
What to do with a 1 minute timer
| Activity | How |
|---|---|
| Math fact sprint | How many facts can you answer in one minute? Keep the same sheet and try to beat your score. |
| Reading fluency check | Read a fresh passage aloud for one minute and count the words read correctly. |
| Typing speed | A 1 minute typing test gives words per minute directly. |
| Minute to win it | Stack cups, sort blocks or write as many words with "at" as you can. |
| Quiet minute | One calm minute before a test or after recess. |
| Clean-up countdown | "Everything off the floor before the pie is gone." |
One-minute reading fluency checks
For a formal reading assessment, follow the assessment publisher's administration and timing instructions. This classroom countdown is not a standardized test. A single timed reading cannot establish a reading level or diagnose a learning difficulty. For informal practice, choose an appropriate passage, agree on the task beforehand and discuss the reading afterward rather than treating speed as the only goal.
Teaching time with one minute
A minute is a building block for telling time. Show children the interactive clock and press +1 min: the minute hand moves one tiny tick. Sixty of those make an hour, when the minute hand has gone all the way around. Then run the 1 minute timer and watch a real minute pass.
Try a one-minute estimation game
Children are famously bad at guessing how long a minute is, and that makes a fun game. Everyone closes their eyes. Start the timer with the sound on, and each child quietly stands up when they think a minute has passed. Open eyes at the chime and see who was closest. Then switch roles: one child watches the pie and calls out "half" at 30 seconds while the others guess. After a few rounds, guesses get much closer. It's a small lesson in the difference between how time feels and how it's measured, which is the start of telling time.
Other timers
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions
How many seconds is 1 minute?
One minute is 60 seconds. On a clock, the second hand goes all the way around once, and the minute hand moves from one small tick mark to the next.
Can I make it 90 seconds or 30 seconds?
Yes. Type 1:30 or 0:30 in the box under the timer and press Set. Any length works, from a few seconds to a whole day.
