How to use it
- Press Start
The timer opens set to 15 minutes. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.
- Pick a picture
Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.
- Choose the ending
Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.
A 15 minute timer for focus and rest
Fifteen minutes is a solid block of time: enough for a page of math, a practice session or a short rest, but not so long that young children lose track. This timer opens set to fifteen minutes. Press Start and the pie begins to shrink toward 12. When it's empty, the timer turns green, says Time's up and plays a soft chime (or stays silent with No sound).
Pie view is especially useful here, because fifteen minutes is exactly a quarter of an hour, and the pie looks like a clock face.
How long is 15 minutes?
| Measure | 15 minutes |
|---|---|
| Seconds | 900 |
| Part of an hour | 1/4 (a quarter hour) |
| Minute hand | Three numbers, a quarter turn (12 to 3) |
| Hour hand | A quarter of the way to the next number |
| Each quarter of the pie | 3 minutes 45 seconds |
A quarter hour: teaching with a 15 minute timer
Fifteen minutes is where children first meet fractions on a clock. On the interactive clock, drag the minute hand from 12 to 3: that's a quarter of the way around, and the time is "quarter past". Keep going to 9 and there's a quarter left before the next hour, so it's "quarter to".
Try this with your child:
- Look at a real clock and note the time, say 2:00.
- Start the 15 minute timer.
- When it rings, look again: 2:15, quarter past two. The minute hand moved a quarter turn while the timer ran.
- Start another one and ask: what time will it be when this ends? (2:30, half past two.)
The telling time game at the Quarter past and to level gives practice reading those times.
What to do with a 15 minute timer
| Activity | How |
|---|---|
| Focus block | Fifteen minutes of homework, then a short break. |
| Rest or quiet time | Lie down or read quietly until the chime, a gentle option for kids who've outgrown naps. |
| Instrument practice | A daily 15 minutes beats a weekly hour for many young musicians. |
| Short test section | Full screen with numbers only and the sound off. |
| Screen time | A clear end to a show or game, agreed before it starts. |
| Outdoor play | "Back inside when the timer rings." |
Building up to longer work
If ten minutes of focus is easy, fifteen is the next step. Watch for signs of fatigue, like fidgeting or many mistakes in the last few minutes, and take a short break when you see them. When fifteen minutes is comfortable, try the 20 minute timer.
Fifteen minutes in the kitchen
Many simple recipes take about a quarter hour: baking cookies, boiling pasta, a batch of muffins in a mini tin. Cooking with a 15 minute timer is a good way to bring time into everyday life. Put the screen where your child can see it, and talk about it as it runs: "It's quarter past five now; the cookies come out at half past." Older children can be in charge of the timer: they check the recipe, set the time and press Start. That's real-world elapsed time, measuring, and reading, all in one batch of cookies.
In pie view, each quarter of a 15 minute timer is 3 minutes 45 seconds, so children can see how a quarter of a quarter hour looks.
Other timers
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions
How many seconds is 15 minutes?
Fifteen minutes is 900 seconds. On a clock, the minute hand moves three numbers, a quarter of the way around: from the 12 to the 3.
Why is 15 minutes called a quarter hour?
An hour has 60 minutes, and 15 is one quarter of 60. That's where "quarter past" (15 minutes after the hour) and "quarter to" (15 minutes before) come from.
Can I make it 15 minutes and 30 seconds?
Yes. Type 15:30 in the box under the timer and press Set.
