How to use it

  1. Press Start

The timer opens set to 10 minutes. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.

  2. Pick a picture

Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.

  3. Choose the ending

Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.

A 10 minute timer for reading, practice and stations

Ten minutes is long enough for real work: a chapter of a book, a page of math, a round at a learning station. It's also short enough that most children can stay with it. This timer opens set to ten minutes. Press Start and the pie empties toward 12. At the end the timer turns green, says Time's up and plays a gentle chime, unless you've chosen No sound.

For independent work, the pie or bar view is usually best, because children can glance up and see roughly how much time is left without watching the seconds count down.

Ten minutes is also a friendly number for elapsed time. "It's 9:55. Reading lasts 10 minutes. When does it end?" The answer, 10:05, crosses an hour, which the elapsed time calculator shows as two jumps on a number line: 5 minutes to 10:00, then 5 more.

Ten minutes of reading or practice

Short, regular practice usually beats one long session, for reading, music and math facts alike. Ten minutes a day is a realistic routine for many children:

  1. Pick the same time each day, like right after school or before bed.
  2. Start the 10 minute timer in pie or sand view.
  3. Read, practice or work until the chime. No checking the clock.
  4. Stop when it rings, even mid-chapter. Ending on time keeps the routine easy to start again tomorrow.

As stamina grows, move to the 15 minute timer or 20 minute timer.

Station rotations with 10 minute timers

The classroom timer opens with big numbers, which reads well from across the room when several timers are running.

What else fits in 10 minutes

  • A short read-aloud or one picture book.
  • Ten minutes of outdoor play or a walk around the block.
  • A timed telling time game session, a few quizzes back to back.
  • Tidying one room, with the timer as the finish line.

Estimation and ten minutes

Ten minutes is long enough that children lose track of it completely, so it's a good length for an estimation game with older kids. Before starting the timer, ask everyone to write down what they think they'll finish in ten minutes: how many pages read, problems solved or toys tidied. When the timer rings, compare. Over a few days children get better at planning their time, a skill that matters more and more as homework grows. If the predictions are always too high, try a smaller task; if they're always too low, a bigger one.

A quick check for older children: if the bar is three-quarters gone, how many minutes are left? (Two and a half.) Fractions of time are good mental math.

Other timers

For a shorter block, use the 5 minute timer. For longer work, try the 15 minute timer. Every timer here keeps exact time from its end moment, so it stays right even if you switch tabs.

Keeping the alarm available

The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.

Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions

How many seconds is 10 minutes?

Ten minutes is 600 seconds. On a clock, the minute hand moves two numbers, for example from the 12 to the 2.

Can I run a 10 minute timer for each station?

Yes. Press Add timer for up to four timers, name each one (Station 1, Station 2) and start them separately. Each keeps its own time.

What fraction of an hour is 10 minutes?

One sixth. Six 10-minute blocks make an hour, and on the pie view a 10 minute timer empties in the same way a one-hour timer would, just six times faster.
