The Dolch first grade list has 41 words. It's where function words like of, from, could, were and once show up, and those are hard because their spellings don't match their sounds (of sounds like uv, once starts with a w sound). The list also adds question words how and when, plus everyday verbs like ask, give, know, take, think and walk.
