The third grade list is the last of Dolch's five service-word levels: 41 words including laugh, together, myself, eight, carry and done. Many of them are decodable by third grade (hot, cut, long), so the real work is speed: reading them instantly in running text so attention goes to meaning.

Print the checklist and check off what your child reads within about three seconds. A third grader who still stalls on several Dolch words often benefits from a quick review of the earlier levels too. Use the assessment preset on the Dolch page to test all 220 words at once.

Tips for using it

  • Laugh, eight and done are the irregular ones here. Give them extra spelling practice.
  • Time a one-minute read of the list each week and graph the number read correctly.
