Alongside his 220 service words, Dolch kept a separate list of 95 nouns that showed up often in the children's books he studied: everyday things like apple, ball, bed, door, milk and tree, family words like mother, father, brother and sister, and a few that date the list, such as kitty, robin, Christmas and Santa Claus.
Nouns are easier than service words because most can be pictured, and many are decodable. Use this checklist to see which ones your child reads instantly, and pair the nouns with service words to build sentences (the big dog, my red ball). The nouns flash cards make a good picture-drawing activity: have your child draw each word on the back.
Tips for using it
- Mix nouns into sentence practice: I see the ___. My ___ is big.
- Skip or swap dated nouns that don't fit your family; they matter less than the service words.
