The pre-primer list is the first Dolch level: 40 short, very common words that most kids meet in preschool or early kindergarten. It includes the color words blue, red and yellow, the number words one, two and three, and high-use words like the, and, said, where and you. Several of them (said, where, one, two) don't follow beginning phonics patterns, which is exactly why they're taught by sight.
Print this checklist and check off each word your child reads within about three seconds. Most kids learn the pre-primer list over a few months, three to five words at a time. When they know 30 or more, move on to the 52 Dolch primer words.
Tips for using it
- Start with I, a, the, and, is and see. They unlock dozens of simple sentences right away.
- Teach look-alike pairs (to and two, we and me) a week apart so they don't get mixed up.
