The primer list is the second Dolch level and the one usually taught in kindergarten. Its 52 words add color words black, brown and white, the number four, and a cluster of past-tense verbs (ate, came, did, ran, saw, went) that kids need for reading simple stories. There are also several irregular spellings, such as are, was, what, who, they and there.
Print the checklist and check off the words your child reads instantly. Kindergarten teachers often aim for the pre-primer and primer lists together (92 words) by the end of the year, so if your child already knows the pre-primer words, this is the next list to master.
Tips for using it
- Group was, saw and what for practice. They're among the most often reversed or confused words.
- Use the flash cards for a daily two-minute game, and only add new cards when old ones are solid.
