Fry's fifth hundred (words 401–500) leans into science and language-arts words: surface, ocean, scientists, machine, equation, government, noun and verb. Number words thousands and six appear, along with the irregular am, oh and though.
By this point the list is less about sight memory and more about fast, accurate reading of longer words. Use the checklist to spot slow words, then practice those in sentences. The fifth hundred is often used in third and fourth grade as a fluency and spelling check.
