These are Fry's first 100 Instant Words, in the order Fry ranked them: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, and on through part. Fry estimated that these 100 words make up about half of everything kids read, so they're the highest-payoff words to know by sight. The list is numbered so you can work through it in four groups of 25.
Print the checklist and check off each word read within about three seconds. Most children learn this hundred in kindergarten and first grade. Words like of, was, said, one and who need extra practice because their spellings don't match their sounds.
Usually this means Fry's first 100 Instant Words, the 100 most common words in reading material, from the and of to may and part. Some schools use the Dolch pre-primer and primer lists (92 words) instead.
Many kindergarten programs aim for somewhere between 25 and 100 sight words by the end of the year. Goals vary by school, and steady phonics progress matters as much as the count.
