Fry's third hundred (words 201–300) finishes the set of words that Fry estimated make up about 65 percent of all written material. It mixes story words (story, mountains, family, river) with school words (example, important, group) and a few contractions (don't, it's) and tricky spellings like thought, enough, eyes and often.

Print the checklist and check off the words your child reads within about three seconds. This hundred usually lands in second and third grade. Once a child knows Fry's first 300, most remaining reading trouble comes from longer, decodable words, so phonics and syllable work become the bigger lever.

Tips for using it

  • Pair thought with through and though; the ough spellings are easier to learn together.
  • Use It's and its in the same practice so the apostrophe means something.
