Thirty stacked problems that mix addition and subtraction within 20, half of each, in random order. Mixed sheets make children read the sign on every problem, which is exactly the skill that single-operation drills skip.

It's a natural check after separate addition and subtraction practice. To use it for bigger numbers, set both numbers to 2-digit or 3-digit and choose a regrouping level. Fact families make a good warm-up: 6 + 8 = 14, 8 + 6 = 14, 14 − 6 = 8, 14 − 8 = 6.

Tips for using it

  • Have your child circle every minus sign before starting.
  • Use fact families: one addition fact gives you two subtraction facts.

Questions

Why mix addition and subtraction?

Real problems don't announce the operation. Mixing them builds the habit of reading each sign and shows that subtraction undoes addition.

Can I make mixed worksheets with bigger numbers?

Yes. Change First number and Second number to 2-digit or 3-digit, and pick a Regrouping setting.
