Eighteen problems adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, from halves to twelfths. Some sums are bigger than 1, so the answer key writes them as mixed numbers: 7/6 = 1 1/6. In the Common Core standards, 4th graders add and subtract fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers, and multiply a fraction by a whole number.

The key idea: when the denominators match, add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator. The pieces are the same size, so you're just counting pieces. For the rest of 4th grade fractions, see equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and multiplying fractions by whole numbers.

Tips for using it

  • Never add the denominators: 1/5 + 2/5 is 3 fifths, not 3/10.
  • To turn 9/4 into a mixed number, ask how many whole 4/4 fit (2) and what's left (1/4).

Questions

Why don't you add the denominators?

The denominator names the size of the pieces. Adding 1 fifth and 2 fifths gives 3 fifths; the pieces stay fifths.

What fractions do 4th graders learn?

Equivalent fractions, comparing with different denominators, adding and subtracting with like denominators and mixed numbers, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, and tenths and hundredths as decimals.
