Twelve circles and bars split into halves, thirds or fourths, with some parts shaded. Children write the fraction that's shaded. In the Common Core standards, 2nd graders partition circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares and describe them as halves, thirds and fourths, and this sheet is that skill on paper.
Talk through each picture: how many equal parts? How many are shaded? That second question is the top number, the first is the bottom. Then flip it with shade the fraction, where children color in the parts. When ready, move on to 3rd grade fractions.
The 2nd grade standard uses words like halves, thirds and fourths. Many programs introduce the written form like 1/4 at the same time, which is what this sheet practices.
A fraction names equal shares. A circle cut into four unequal pieces isn't divided into fourths, which is a good point to discuss with your child.
