Twenty equivalent-fraction problems, each with one missing number: 2/3 = ?/12, 15/20 = 3/?, and so on. Half scale up (multiply top and bottom by the same number) and half scale down (divide), which is the habit children need for adding fractions and simplifying later.

The rule to say out loud: whatever you do to the bottom, do to the top. In the Common Core standards, 3rd graders find simple equivalent fractions with pictures and 4th graders explain why multiplying top and bottom by the same number works. For a picture-based start, use the 3rd grade fractions worksheets; next, try simplifying fractions.

Tips for using it

  • Ask: what was the bottom multiplied by? Multiply the top by the same number.
  • A fraction strip chart shows that 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 line up.

Questions

What are equivalent fractions?

Fractions that name the same amount, like 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8. You get one from another by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

What grade learns equivalent fractions?

3rd graders recognize simple equivalent fractions using models. 4th graders generate them and explain why they're equal.
