Eighteen multiplication problems: half multiply a fraction by a whole number (3/4 × 6), half multiply two fractions (2/3 × 3/5). Answers are in simplest form, and products bigger than 1 are mixed numbers, so 3/4 × 6 = 18/4 = 4 1/2 on the key.
Fraction times whole number is a 4th grade standard; fraction times fraction is 5th grade. The rule is the simplest in all of fractions: multiply the tops, multiply the bottoms, simplify. To focus on one kind, change Numbers above. Next step: dividing fractions.
Write the whole number over 1 and multiply across, or multiply the numerator by the whole number: 2/5 × 3 = 6/5 = 1 1/5.
Multiplying by a fraction less than 1 means taking part of something. Half of 2/3 is 1/3, which is less than 2/3.
