Eighteen problems mixing addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator, all with answers of 1 or less. Children read each sign, combine the numerators, keep the denominator, and simplify when they can (2/8 + 4/8 = 6/8 = 3/4).

This is the place to start adding fractions, usually in 4th grade. For sums bigger than 1 with mixed-number answers, use the 4th grade fractions sheet. For different denominators, go to adding fractions with unlike denominators and the 5th grade sheet.

Tips for using it

  • Circle the sign first; mixed sheets catch kids who add out of habit.
  • Check each answer: can the top and bottom both be divided by 2, 3 or 5?

Questions

Do you simplify after adding fractions?

Yes, it's standard to write answers in simplest form. 3/10 + 2/10 = 5/10, which simplifies to 1/2.

Can I make the problems use different denominators?

Yes. Turn on Unlike denominators above, or use the unlike-denominators worksheet.
