Sh is usually the first digraph children learn: it's easy to hear, and it's the "be quiet" sound they already know. On this sheet your child reads an sh word, traces it, and writes it, saying /sh/ as one sound while writing both letters.
The words have sh at the start (ship, shop, shed) and at the end (fish, dish, brush). Reading both positions keeps children from expecting sh only at the beginning.
Once sh feels easy, ch and th come next. The sh and ch sounds are close, so a sort or missing-letter sheet with both is a good follow-up.
Tips for using it
- Put a finger to the lips for the sh sound, and trace s and h without lifting between them.
- Have your child sort the words by where sh is: at the start or at the end.

What is the sh digraph?
The letters s and h together making one sound, /sh/, as in ship and fish.
Which digraph should I teach first?
Many programs start with sh, then ch, th, wh and ck. Some begin with th or ch. Any order works if each is taught clearly before mixing.
