On this ch worksheet, each word is missing its digraph. Your child chooses from sh, ch, th or wh (or ck at the end) and writes the one that makes a real word. Only one choice works for each word, so they need to read the rest of the word and think about the whole thing.

The words have ch at the start (chip, chin, chop, check) and at the end (much, rich, lunch, bench). Most words that end in a /ch/ sound after a short vowel use tch (catch, match), but a few common words like much, such and rich don't, so they're on this sheet.

Say each word with each choice: "ship, chip, whip". Hearing the real word is part of the practice.

Tips for using it

  • Practice the mouth difference: sh is a long, quiet sound; ch is a quick sneeze-like sound.
  • After filling in, have your child read the whole column aloud.

Questions

What sound does ch make?

Usually /ch/ as in chip. In some words it says /k/ (school) or /sh/ (chef), but those come much later.

Why is it lunch and not luntch?

After a consonant like n, the /ch/ sound is spelled ch. The tch spelling is used right after a short vowel, as in match.
