A digraph is two letters that spell one sound, and sound boxes make that idea concrete. On this sheet, ship has three boxes, not four: sh, i, p. Your child reads the word, touches a dot for each sound, and writes the letters for each sound in its box, so both letters of a digraph go in one box.
The words mix sh, ch, th, wh and ck. Words like bench and lunch (n plus ch at the end) have four sounds, which makes for good counting practice.
Digraphs usually come right after short-vowel CVC words. If your child is new to them, start with one digraph (the sh, ch and th sheets) before this mixed sheet.
Tips for using it
- Say: 'Two letters, one sound, one box.' Have your child underline the digraph before writing.
- For ck, point out that it only shows up at the end, right after a short vowel.
