How many counties are in Wyoming?
Wyoming has 23 counties. 38 states have more, and 11 have fewer.
Wyoming has 23 counties. Laramie County holds both the capital, Cheyenne, and the most people. Sweetwater County, in the southwest, is the largest. Yellowstone National Park lies mostly in Park and Teton counties in the northwest corner.
How Wyoming's counties were formed
Wyoming's first counties were drawn by Dakota Territory in 1867 and 1868, as the Union Pacific Railroad crossed the region: Laramie and Carter (later Sweetwater). Wyoming Territory was organized in 1868, and the original five counties ran in long strips from Montana to Colorado. Teton and Sublette counties, both created in 1921, are the newest of the 23.
Wyoming regions and the counties in each
Wyoming's regions follow mountains and basins. Southeast Wyoming includes Laramie (Cheyenne), Albany (Laramie) and Goshen. The I-80 corridor across the south runs through Carbon, Sweetwater and Uinta. Northwest Wyoming holds Park, Teton and Sublette counties, with Yellowstone, Grand Teton and the Wind River Range. North-central Wyoming is the Bighorn Basin (Big Horn, Washakie, Hot Springs) with the Bighorn Mountains, and Northeast Wyoming includes Campbell County's coal mines and Crook County, home of Devils Tower.
Notable places on the Wyoming county map
Gannett Peak, the state's highest point at 13,804 feet, sits on the line between Fremont and Sublette counties in the Wind River Range. Yellowstone, which became the world's first national park in 1872, lies mostly in Park and Teton counties, and Devils Tower in Crook County was the first national monument, in 1906. Wyoming has the fewest people of any state, so its 23 counties average more than 4,000 square miles each.
