This version of the fraction wall labels each part with its decimal value instead of a fraction: halves are 0.5, fourths are 0.25, fifths are 0.2 and tenths are 0.1. Thirds, sixths, sevenths, ninths, elevenths and twelfths repeat forever as decimals, so they're rounded to three places (1/3 shows as 0.333).

It's a handy reference for 5th–7th graders converting fractions, decimals and percents. Switch Labels to Percents for 50%, 33.3%, 25% and so on. Comparing rows still works the same way: line up the bars to see that 0.25 + 0.25 is the same length as 0.5.

Tips for using it

  • Point out which fractions have short decimals (halves, fourths, fifths, eighths, tenths) and why: their denominators only use 2s and 5s.
  • Print the fraction version and the decimal version and match them up.

Questions

What is 1/8 as a decimal?

0.125. On the chart, each part of the eighths row is labeled 0.125.

Why are some decimals rounded?

Fractions like 1/3 and 1/7 have decimals that never end, so the chart rounds them to three places. The exact value is the fraction.
