How to use it
- Press Start
The timer opens set to 5 minutes. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.
- Pick a picture
Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.
- Choose the ending
Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.
A 5 minute timer children can see
Five minutes is probably the most used timer length there is. It's the "five more minutes" at the park, the brain break between lessons, and the warm-up at the start of class. This timer opens set to five minutes. Press Start and the colored pie starts full and shrinks toward 12. When it's gone, the timer turns green, says Time's up and plays a soft chime (choose Bell, Soft beeps or No sound if you prefer).
Prefer a different picture? Switch to Sand timer, Bar or Numbers only. Your choice is remembered on this device.
How long is 5 minutes?
| Measure | 5 minutes |
|---|---|
| Seconds | 300 |
| Part of an hour | 1/12 |
| Minute hand | From one number to the next (12 to 1) |
| Hour hand | One-twelfth of the way between two numbers |
| Each quarter of the pie | 1 minute 15 seconds |
This is the key fact behind telling time to five minutes: each number on the clock is five minutes apart for the minute hand. Children count by 5s around the face: 5, 10, 15, 20. Watch it on the interactive clock with 5-minute labels on, then run the timer and watch the minute hand on a real clock move one number.
The five-minute warning
Stopping something fun is hard, especially for young children. A warning helps, and a visible warning helps more.
- Say it once, clearly: "Five more minutes of blocks, then it's time for lunch."
- Start the 5 minute timer where they can see it, in pie or sand view.
- Point to it halfway: "Look, half the red is gone."
- When the chime plays, follow through.
The timer takes the argument out of the moment: it isn't the adult saying stop, it's the timer.
What to do with a 5 minute timer
| Activity | How |
|---|---|
| Brain break | Five minutes of movement, a dance song or a stretch between lessons. |
| Bell ringer | A warm-up problem on the board as students arrive. |
| Clean-up | Everything put away before the pie is gone. |
| Reading warm-up | Five minutes of independent reading before a lesson. |
| Speed practice | A telling time game quiz or a page of math facts. |
| Free-choice time | A reward that has a clear start and end. |
Five-minute chunks for focus
For many children, five minutes of focused work is a realistic starting point, especially for younger kids or after a long day. Set five minutes of work, then a short break, and stretch the work time as stamina grows. When five minutes feels easy, try the 10 minute timer.
Five minutes on a real clock
Five minutes is also the easiest length to see on a real clock, which makes it a natural bridge to telling time. Put an analog clock beside the screen. Start the 5 minute timer when the minute hand is on a number, say the 3 (quarter past). When the chime plays, the minute hand has moved to the 4. Ask: how many minutes did it move? Five. And how many minutes past the hour is it now? Twenty. Repeat at different numbers and children discover counting by fives for themselves, which is the 2nd grade telling time standard.
Other timers
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions
How many seconds is 5 minutes?
Five minutes is 300 seconds. On a clock, the minute hand moves from one number to the next, for example from the 12 to the 1.
What is a five-minute warning?
A heads-up that an activity ends in five minutes. Starting a visible 5 minute timer when you give the warning lets children see the time running out, which makes the change easier for many of them.
Will the timer still ring if I switch to another tab?
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
