How to use it
- Press Start
The timer opens set to 3 minutes. Press Start; Pause, Reset and the plus and minus buttons work any time. The space bar starts and pauses it too.
- Pick a picture
Pie shrinks toward 12, Sand timer empties, Bar drains, or choose Numbers only. The countdown numbers show under every picture.
- Choose the ending
Pick Chime, Bell, Soft beeps or No sound. When time is up the timer turns green and says "Time's up". Full screen makes it big enough for a classroom.
A 3 minute timer for the classroom and home
Three minutes is a sweet spot. It's long enough to write a few sentences, finish a game round or clean up a table, and short enough that nobody loses focus. That's why the 3 minute sand timer is a staple in classrooms and board game boxes. This online version opens set to three minutes and works on any screen. Press Start and the pie (or sand) empties; when it's done, the timer turns green, says Time's up and plays a gentle chime unless you've turned sound off.
How long is 3 minutes?
| Measure | 3 minutes |
|---|---|
| Seconds | 180 |
| Part of an hour | 1/20 |
| Minute hand | Three small tick marks |
| Second hand | Three times around |
| One third of the pie | 1 minute |
A handy way to picture it: three minutes is about the length of a typical pop song, or of singing "Happy Birthday" about ten times.
Three-minute quick writes
A quick write is a short, timed burst of writing: no stopping, no erasing, just getting ideas down. Three minutes is a common length. Try it like this:
- Give a prompt: "What would you do with a day off school?" or "Explain how you solved problem 4."
- Start the timer in full screen with the pie view, so everyone can see how much is left without watching numbers.
- Pens keep moving until the chime.
- Share with a partner for one more minute.
Quick writes warm up writers, check understanding at the end of a lesson, and give quieter students time to think before they talk. For prompts, see the writing prompt generator.
What else fits in 3 minutes
| Activity | How |
|---|---|
| Turn-and-talk | Partners discuss a question for three minutes, then share. |
| Transition | "Line up and be ready before the sand runs out." |
| Board game turns | A time limit for each player's turn (word games, drawing games). |
| Stretch break | Three minutes of stretching or movement between lessons. |
| Mental math warm-up | Three minutes of facts on the board or in the telling time game challenge. |
| Plank or wall sit | For older kids: see how many seconds you can hold. |
Teaching time with three minutes
Ask: "The timer started at 10:58. When will it end?" Crossing into the next hour is a common stumbling block, and three minutes makes a small, friendly example (11:01). The elapsed time calculator shows that kind of jump on a number line, and the interactive clock lets children watch the hour hand move as the minute hand passes 12.
Three minutes for a calm-down corner
Many classrooms have a calm-down corner, a quiet spot with a few soft objects where a child can reset after a big feeling. A short visual timer gives the visit a clear shape: when the sand runs out, check in with the teacher. Three minutes is a common choice because it's long enough to breathe and settle, and short enough that the child doesn't miss much. Use the sand view and turn the sound to Soft beeps or No sound, so the end is gentle. Let the child press Start, so the timer feels like their tool rather than a consequence.
Other timers
The countdown uses an end timestamp and catches up when the page redraws. Background tabs, muted audio, screen locking and device sleep can delay or prevent the alarm. Keep the page open and the device awake when the end signal matters.
Before a group activity, run a short countdown to confirm the chosen sound is audible and the screen is easy to see. Explain what happens at the end, and let participants know how to ask for more time. Choose a duration for the task rather than treating a countdown as a measure of ability.

Questions
How many seconds is 3 minutes?
Three minutes is 180 seconds. On a clock, the minute hand moves three small tick marks, and the second hand goes around three times.
Is this like a 3 minute sand timer?
Yes. Choose Sand timer under Show and the top bulb empties into the bottom over exactly three minutes. Unlike a real sand timer, it can't break and it's big enough for the whole room.
Can I add or take away time while it runs?
Yes. The plus and minus buttons add or take away a minute. You can also pause and resume as often as you like.
