This 1st grade spelling list has 18 weekly units of 10 words. It reviews each short vowel in CVC words, then adds digraphs (shed, chat, moth), beginning and ending blends (frog, jump), -ck and -ng/-nk endings, silent e for long a, i, o and u (cake, kite, bone, cube), ee and ea, r-controlled ar and or, and the endings -s, -es, -ed and -ing. Two units cover high-frequency words like said, was, they and could.
Print the year's list or choose a unit in the generator for that week's worksheets and test. Expect most first graders to spell short vowel words confidently by midyear and silent e words by spring.
Tips for using it
- Teach silent e by writing cap, then adding e to make cape.
