This 3rd grade spelling list has 16 weekly units of 15 words. It moves from one-syllable patterns into longer words: closed syllables (basket, rabbit), open syllables (paper, tiger), consonant-le (table, puzzle), prefixes un-, re- and pre-, suffixes -ful, -less, -ly and -ness, comparatives (happier, thinnest), plurals including -ies and irregular plurals (mice, wolves), silent letters (knee, wrist, lamb), ph and gh, and the homophones kids mix up most (their, there, they're).

Print the year or choose a unit for worksheets and a test. Third graders spell longer words best by splitting them into syllables first, so encourage clapping and spelling one syllable at a time.

Tips for using it

  • Draw a line between syllables (bas | ket) before spelling.
  • Practice the y-to-i rule with pairs: baby, babies; happy, happier.
