Kindergarten spelling starts with sounds, not memorization. These 12 weekly units of six words begin with short a word families (cat, hat, map, cap), move through short i, o, u and e, mix the vowels, add the first high-frequency words (the, a, I, see, and, go), then finish with double letters (hill, kiss, off) and the digraphs sh, ch, th and wh.
Print the whole year here, or pick a unit number in the generator to make that week's worksheets and test. Kindergartners spell best by saying the word slowly and writing one letter for each sound, so primary lines and short lists are the default.
Tips for using it
- Use letter tiles or magnets before paper: build cat, then change one letter to make hat.
- Accept phonetic spellings in free writing; reserve correct spelling for the week's words.

Questions
Should kindergartners have spelling words?
Many programs start simple spelling in the second half of kindergarten, mostly three-letter short vowel words. It's a natural extension of learning letter sounds.
What are good kindergarten spelling words?
Short vowel CVC words (cat, pig, dog, bug, bed) and a few very common sight words (the, I, see, and). These match what kindergartners are learning to read.
