Ten long division problems that divide a four-digit number by a two-digit number, like 2,592 ÷ 36, each dividing evenly. This is the 5th grade standard exactly: whole-number quotients with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.

Two-digit divisors add one new skill: estimating each digit of the quotient. Round the divisor (36 is about 40) to guess, then adjust if the product is too big or too small. Two columns leave plenty of room for the work. For a step back, use 4th grade division with one-digit divisors.

Tips for using it

  • Round the divisor to estimate each quotient digit, then adjust up or down.
  • Write a quick list of divisor multiples (36, 72, 108 …) at the side.

Questions

How do you divide by a two-digit number?

Use the same steps as long division: estimate how many times the divisor fits into the first digits, multiply, subtract and bring down. Rounding the divisor makes the estimate easier.

Do these problems have remainders?

No, every problem divides evenly so children can focus on the steps. Turn on remainders above for extra practice.
