How to use it

  1. Choose facts or long division

A fact range (0–10, 0–12) for the first number makes division facts; a digit range (2-, 3-, 4-digit) makes long division.

  2. Pick the divisor

Set Second number to 0–10, 1-digit or 2-digit, or use Focus fact to divide by one number.

  3. Remainders or not

Leave remainders off for exact division, or turn them on so every problem leaves a remainder from 1 to one less than the divisor.

  4. Print

Vertical layout draws long division brackets with room to work; horizontal is quicker for facts. Print or download the PDF.

How to use the division worksheet generator

Division has two very different stages, and the First number setting chooses between them. A fact range (0–5, 0–10, 0–12, 0–20) makes division facts: the range sets the answer, so a "0–12" sheet has quotients from 0 to 12 and every problem divides evenly. A digit range makes long division: 3-digit with a 1-digit divisor gives classic 4th grade problems like 672 ÷ 7, and 4-digit with a 2-digit divisor gives 5th grade problems like 2,592 ÷ 36. Divisors of 1 are left out of long division because they're trivial.

Remainders off means every problem divides exactly. Turn them on and every problem leaves a remainder between 1 and one less than the divisor, never zero and never too big. Focus fact fixes the divisor, handy for practicing ÷ 6 right after the 6 times table.

What makes a good division worksheet

  • Facts first. Long division is a chain of division facts; shaky facts make every step slow. Practice facts until they're quick.
  • One new idea at a time. Learn long division without remainders, then add remainders, then two-digit divisors.
  • Space to work. Long division needs room under the bracket for each multiply-and-subtract step, so the generator spaces problems out.
  • Mixed divisors. Divisors are dealt evenly so children don't only see ÷ 2 and ÷ 5.

Printing tips

Long division sheets print three across at most, so each problem has its own column of working space. Print an extra sheet of scratch paper for 5th grade problems. The answer key prints on separate pages; print only the first pages for your child.

When worksheets aren't enough

Long division is where many children first get stuck in math. If the steps keep breaking down, the issue is often place value or a missing fact, and a program that explains the reasoning helps. Math Mammoth, Beast Academy and Teaching Textbooks all teach division in depth. Compare more in the best homeschool math curriculum or math programs for struggling students. Questions

How does the generator decide the numbers for division facts?

For fact ranges, the first number sets the quotient (the answer), so 'facts to 12' means answers from 0 to 12 and every problem divides evenly. Divisors are dealt evenly, so ÷ 7 appears as often as ÷ 2.

Does the answer key show remainders?

Yes. Remainders appear after the quotient with an R, like 47 R3.

Can I make long division with two-digit divisors?

Yes. Set First number to 3-digit or 4-digit and Second number to 2-digit. Choose 2 columns so there's room for every step.
