Twenty three-digit subtraction problems, every one needing at least one regroup, sometimes two. This is where borrowing gets real: children have to regroup tens into ones and hundreds into tens, and occasionally borrow across a zero.

Give each problem room and encourage neat rewriting of the digits above each column. Estimating first is a powerful check. If two-column borrowing is overwhelming, go back to 2-digit subtraction with regrouping for a few days.

Tips for using it

  • Work one column at a time and rewrite the new digits above the old ones.
  • Check by adding the answer and the bottom number; you should get the top number.

Questions

What is the hardest part of 3-digit subtraction?

Borrowing across a zero, as in 600 − 247. Children need to regroup a hundred into tens before they can regroup a ten into ones.

Can I make easier 3-digit subtraction worksheets?

Yes. Set Regrouping to Never for problems with no borrowing, or Some for a mix.
