Twenty three-digit minus three-digit problems with a mix of regrouping. 3rd graders are expected to subtract fluently within 1,000, and the trickiest cases (like borrowing across a zero in 503 − 278) show up here naturally.
When a problem needs borrowing in two columns, slow down: regroup one column at a time and rewrite the digits. Estimating first (500 − 280 is about 220) catches big mistakes. For focused borrowing practice, see 3-digit subtraction with regrouping; for a broader check, try the 3rd grade math review.
In 403 − 167, there are no tens to borrow from, so take one hundred and make it 10 tens. Then take one of those tens to make 13 ones. The top number becomes 3 hundreds, 9 tens, 13 ones.
Fluent addition and subtraction within 1,000 using place value. Four-digit subtraction with the standard algorithm comes in 4th grade.
