Fact ranges (0–5, 0–10, 0–20) or 1- to 4-digit numbers for each part of the problem.
Never, Some or Always. Always means every problem needs at least one borrow.
Vertical for column subtraction, horizontal for mental math; 10 to 100 problems.
Print or download the PDF, with the answer key on separate pages.
Set First number (the number you start with) and Second number (the number you take away). The generator keeps the larger number on top unless you turn on Allow negative answers, which is only useful for 6th grade integer practice. Fact ranges like 0–20 minus 0–10 make the subtraction facts children need from 1st grade on; digit ranges make column subtraction.
Regrouping controls borrowing. Never means every top digit is at least as big as the one below it, so children can learn column subtraction one place at a time. Always means at least one borrow in every problem: focused practice for the hardest step. Some mixes them, which is the best check that children decide when to regroup instead of always (or never) doing it.
| Grade | Goal | Try |
|---|---|---|
| K | Subtract within 10 with objects; fluent within 5 | Kindergarten subtraction |
| 1 | Subtract within 20; fluent within 10 | 1st grade subtraction |
| 2 | Subtract within 100 fluently, with regrouping | 2-digit subtraction, with regrouping |
| 3 | Subtract within 1,000 fluently | 3rd grade subtraction, 3-digit subtraction |
| 4 | Multi-digit subtraction with the standard algorithm | Set both numbers to 4-digit |
Then mix operations with addition and subtraction worksheets and subtraction word problems.
For borrowing practice, choose fewer columns so there's room to cross out and rewrite digits above each problem. Print the answer key separately and keep it with you for quick checking, or turn it off before printing.
Borrowing confuses many children because it hides a place value idea: one ten is ten ones. If the steps aren't sticking, base-ten blocks or money (trading a dime for ten pennies) help, and so does a program that teaches with models, like Math-U-See, Singapore Math or Mathseeds. Compare more in the best homeschool math curriculum and math programs for struggling students. Families in many states can use education savings accounts or scholarships for curriculum and tutoring; each program decides what it covers.
No, not unless you turn on Allow negative answers. By default the larger number is always on top.
When the top digit in a column is smaller than the bottom digit, you take one from the next place: one ten becomes ten ones. In 52 − 27, the 5 tens become 4 tens and the 2 ones become 12 ones. It's also called regrouping.
Set both numbers to 3-digit and Regrouping to Always. Problems like 503 − 278 will appear naturally among them.
