Twenty horizontal take-away problems that start from a number up to 10 and subtract 0 to 5. Every answer is zero or more. The Common Core standards ask kindergartners to subtract within 10 using objects or drawings and to be fluent within 5.

Act the first few out: line up 8 crackers, eat 3, count what's left. Then draw it: eight circles, cross out three. Children who connect the symbol to the story understand subtraction instead of just memorizing it. When this is easy, try 1st grade subtraction.

Tips for using it

  • Draw circles for the first number and cross out the second number. Count the ones left.
  • Use the word 'take away' at first, then 'minus' once the idea is clear.

Questions

How do you teach subtraction to kindergartners?

Start with real objects and stories ('5 birds, 2 fly away'), then drawings, then the written problem. Taking away and counting what is left is the core idea.

Should kindergartners memorize subtraction facts?

Only within 5 by the end of kindergarten. Facts within 10 come in 1st grade and to 20 by the end of 2nd grade.
