Six division stories for 3rd grade with totals up to 100. Some are sharing problems (32 cookies shared equally among 4 friends: how many each?) and some are grouping problems (24 students in teams of 4: how many teams?). Children need both to understand division fully.

The 3rd grade standards cover division word problems with equal groups, arrays and measurement, and understanding division as an unknown-factor problem. Act out a sharing problem with real objects, dealing one at a time. Change Grade to 4th for three-digit totals or 5th for two-digit divisors. For remainders practice, see division with remainders.

Tips for using it

  • Sharing: deal objects one at a time into groups. Grouping: make groups of the given size.
  • Check with multiplication: answer × divisor = total.

Questions

What are the two kinds of division problems?

Sharing (you know the number of groups and find how many in each) and grouping (you know the size of each group and find how many groups). Both are written the same way.

Do these problems have remainders?

No, every problem divides evenly. Interpreting remainders is a 4th grade skill.
