Six multiplication stories for 3rd grade: equal groups ("7 bags with 6 apples in each"), arrays (rows of plants or seats), and rates (miles each week). Factors stay within the 10 times table so the focus is on recognizing multiplication, not on hard computation.
The 3rd grade standards ask children to use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems involving equal groups, arrays and measurement. The key question: are there equal groups, and do I know how many groups and how many in each? For bigger numbers, set Grade to 4th or 5th. For division stories, see division word problems.
Look for equal groups where you know the number of groups and the size of each group, and you need the total. Rows and columns (arrays) work the same way.
3rd grade for products within 100. 4th and 5th graders solve them with multi-digit numbers.
